WHAT TYPE OF RACK?
Rack systems are almost as varied as the items that they carry. Racks are available manufactured from both steel and aluminum. They can be mounted to trucks, cars, truck caps, vans and SUVs. Racks are available for commercial and sport applications and everything in-between.
Steel or Aluminum?
One of the questions we typically hear is, “Which rack material is better – steel or aluminum?” Tri-County offers racks made from both and there are differences. Steel racks are very strong and are available in several different configurations. They also vary more in pricing as models range from single ladder units to systems engineered for 1700 lbs. Most steel racks are powder-coated and some are even e-coated for an extended service life.
Racks made from aluminum have grown in popularity in recent years. Aluminum racks add to the appearance of today’s trucks and some are finished to eliminate rust and corrosion. While aluminum racks can be priced somewhat higher than steel, the long service life can make the actual cost of ownership lower. Weight capacity of an aluminum rack compares favorably to a steel rack – the TracRac sliding rack is rated for 1250 lbs. Many aluminum models are available that don’t require drilling to mount the rack.
Truck Bed Mounted
Racks that mount to a pickup truck bed comprise the largest assortment of different racks. Removable racks are available to carry just a single ladder or multiple ladders and scaffolding. Adjustable height sport systems are also available for hauling everything from building materials to bicycles and kayaks. Industrial strength units are available when maximum weight capacity is the most important criteria. Bed mounted racks with extended length are available from TracRac, Kargo Master, and Crosstread for individuals carrying longer loads.
Roof Top Mounted
Folding covers have grown in popularity in recent years because of their ease of use. Soft folding covers, like the Extang Trifecta, allow for easy truck bed access and cover removal. Hard folding covers, like Extang’s Solid Fold and the BakFlip G2, feature the same ease of use, but also add an element of security when the vehicle is equipped with a locking tailgate. Depending on the specific cover, these may sit above the truck bed or relatively flush giving a clean appearance.
Because these covers provide easy access to the truck bed, they are especially popular with truck owners who routinely carry taller cargo. Truck owners with ATV’s appreciate the BakFlip G2 and its ability to provide almost complete access to the truck bed without cover removal.
Truck Cap Mounted
Racks mounted to a truck cap are available as a factory installed option, or in many cases, can be added at a later date. Racks are available for fiberglass, aluminum and commercial truck caps. Some truck cap racks can be removable, while many are a permanent mount. Weight ratings for racks on truck caps can range from 65 lbs to 400 lbs.
